Bearan — Scars of Honor race

Bearans are the largest playable silhouette in Scars of Honor — around two metres tall against a human's 180 centimetres — and the Sacred Order's boldest design swing. They have been rebuilt more than once, moving away from a soft, panda-like read toward a heavy taurine build, and they joined the playable roster for the 30 April – 11 May 2026 technical alpha. Their lore is the one thing that has not been written: work on it began and was paused.
Who the Bearans are — lore and place in the world
The honest headline is that Bearan lore does not exist yet in published form. A February 2026 lore discussion states directly that work on it had begun but was paused, with the possibility of resuming later. Every other race on this list has at least a capital or an origin; the Bearan have a body and a faction.
What is established is their position. They are a Sacred Order race, described in February 2026 as a visually strong option for that side and as one of two races being actively brought into the game at that moment — the other being the Gronthar, who are described as the Bearan's rivals. That rivalry is the one relationship the sources give them.
The developers treat the race as the place where the setting can take bolder creative risks, identifying it as a more unique race than its neighbours and singling it out as a personal favourite among those discussed. That framing explains the amount of art attention the race has received relative to the amount of writing.
One practical note for anyone researching this race elsewhere: the knowledge base's automatic captions transcribe "Bearan" as "Baron" throughout, and "Baron" is also a genuine lore term in this setting for the Twin Baronies and the War of the Barons — human and undead kingdoms with no connection to the bear-folk. Search results that mix the two are conflating a transcription artefact with unrelated lore.
Racial bonuses and passives
No Bearan racial bonus has been published, because no racial bonus has been published for any race in the game.
The December 2025 position was that racial traits remain under internal discussion rather than removed, and that their absence from the redesigned website reflects that unresolved debate. The concern stated against them was interaction with the talent tree: at roughly 300 nodes, flat percentage racial bonuses could become disproportionately strong. The argument for them was that race should mean something in play and not only in the character creator. Designers were described as split, and no decision was presented.
The April 2026 community Q&A produced the same result. Traits are under internal design debate; the main worry is that over-tuning pushes players toward meta picks — choosing a race for its numbers rather than its identity — and if traits do ship, they are unlikely to be game-breaking or highly impactful. Nothing was locked.
A race this size invites obvious assumptions — extra health, knockback resistance, carrying capacity — and none of them is on record. The nearest thing to a mechanical consequence of Bearan scale is not a racial at all but a technical constraint: their target height is limited by things like doorway clearance, which is a level-design problem rather than a stat.
Which classes they can play
The list below is the Sacred Order class pool from the game client data that drives this site's gear planner. All four Sacred Order races share it.
Bearans arrived late enough that their class access is bound up with a specific event: when they and the Gronthar were added for the April 2026 playtest, the stated effect was that both factions gained access to all available classes. Before the two races were added, the class coverage on each side had gaps. The test build itself ran six races against four classes, so the full matrix was never exercised in that alpha.
Druid is the combination most often attached to this race. Bearans were described in November 2025 as a much stronger fit for druid on their side than the alternatives, and when they were revealed players immediately read them as druid-coded — massive, armour-friendly and thematically obvious. That is a fit judgement rather than an exclusive assignment.
The matrix should be read as provisional in any case. Official April 2026 messaging presented a full race × class availability table as the current plan for early access and likely 1.0 while stating it is subject to change; a chart circulated in March was withdrawn for not reflecting the latest setup; and in late April the developers said combinations were still being adjusted in response to feedback.

Where our planner disagrees
The planner also offers: Mage, Assassin.
The planner is missing: Mystic, Pirate.
Our gear planner stores one class list per faction rather than per race, so it disagrees with the official site for seven of the eight races. The list above is the official one; the planner is what needs fixing.
How they look — appearance and customisation
Scale is the defining property. The male Bearan is shown as a large, broad playable race intended to stand noticeably taller than humans, with a target of roughly two metres against human characters at about 180 centimetres. That target is capped by technical limits rather than art direction — doorway clearance is the example given for how large the race can be allowed to become.
The race also receives its own animation treatment, on the grounds that it is less human-like than the others, and its armour is adapted from shared class designs and then adjusted to fit the different body shape.
Customisation is focused on features the silhouette can carry: hair, tusk designs and ears. Back fur is treated as an optional or swappable feature rather than a required default, partly because armour coverage would obscure it much of the time. Earlier material showed tribal-style tattoos and braided hairstyles, and the female Bearan was described as having the same general customisation structure as the male.
The rebuild history is unusually well documented. In October 2024 the race was identified as the one most in need of further iteration, with future work aimed at making both male and female Bearans larger, broader and more physically imposing. November 2024 was blunter: the current in-game appearance was considered unsatisfactory, especially in body structure and silhouette, and the planned revision aimed at a shape language closer to a taurine heavy build than a softer panda-like silhouette. By November 2025 the new Bearan was being described as large, strong, muscular and imposing in contrast to an older version whose silhouette had looked too soft or rounded, and a March 2026 showcase put the updated form beside other character models specifically to highlight its scale.
When the race reached players that same month, feedback narrowed onto specifics — Bearan feet anatomy in particular — and onto a production question: several players noted that having the models done is only part of the work, because armour fitting and animation still have to be completed.

What is still unknown
Bearan lore is the largest gap: work on it started and stopped, and no capital, origin or starting zone has been published. Whether back fur ships as a customisation option is explicitly uncertain — armour compatibility is the stated obstacle. Armour fitting and animation were still incomplete when the models were shown, so the race's final in-game presentation is not settled. The two-metre target height is described as constrained by level geometry, and the final figure is not published. No racial passives exist for any race. There is no announced release date; early access is estimated for Q1 2027 with nothing official behind it.
