The Undead were human once. They rejected mortality and used magic to become immortal, and what they built afterwards is not a horde of shambling corpses but an aristocratic, science-driven society that fused Enlightenment-style rationalism with necromantic practice. They were playable in the 30 April – 11 May 2026 technical alpha. Their customisation is the most distinctive in the game: porcelain prosthetics, masks, and soul wisps in place of eyes.

Who the Undead are — lore and place in the world

The Undead are described as having once been Human, and their transformation began when they rejected mortality and used magic to become immortal. That shared origin is the reason the Sacred Order's wall at Onas Gate — built to hold back the Undead tide — is a wall between relatives.

Their capital is Velas, described as the epicentre of the magic that granted immortality and also withered the surrounding land. The sources are not fully consistent here: a later 2025 discussion renders the capital as Velaris, and the undead queen appears as both Nepherimas and Nefarimis across two lore articles. These are auto-captioned transcripts, and the spelling variance is a property of the source rather than of the setting.

Undead culture is presented as pragmatic, politically divided and intellectually driven, associated with a more advanced blend of magic and technology than the other Iron Garf factions. Their outlook is compared to Enlightenment-style rationalism and humanism fused with necromantic practice — a magically powered mechanical lighthouse is given as an example of what that produces. They are described as more scientifically advanced than humans, having replaced faith with an emphasis on knowledge and technical progress, and their industrial spaces use brass pipes, valves and steam-like machinery. Undead siege engines are gunpowder-oriented, including a large cannon design.

Undead players begin not in Velas but in Gloomset, a settlement focused on research into combining magic and technology and on helping newly risen Undead adjust to their state. That second function has a dark edge: the ritual of becoming Undead is described as imperfect, and in some cases the soul does not return properly, leaving damaged or unstable individuals. Gloomset therefore also functions partly as an asylum and treatment centre for failed or incomplete resurrections.

The theme running underneath is whether immortality has cost them their humanity — the Undead are described as grappling with the meaning of immortality and whether they remain human at all. Within their faction the Undead pursue their own agenda, and Domination's opening scenario is said to revolve around the problems of the undead and how they are incorporated into the faction.

Racial bonuses and passives

There is no published Undead racial bonus. There is no published racial bonus for any race, because the developers have not decided whether racial traits exist.

The December 2025 statement described them as still under internal discussion rather than removed, and explained their absence from the redesigned website as a direct result of that unresolved debate. The concern raised was scale: with a talent tree of roughly 300 nodes, flat percentage racial bonuses could compound into something disproportionately strong. The counter-position was that race choice should carry gameplay meaning beyond appearance. Designers were described as divided and no decision was presented.

In April 2026 a community Q&A got the same position from the development side: racial traits remain under internal design debate; the main worry is that over-tuning them pushes players into meta picks, choosing a race for its stats rather than its identity; and if traits ship, they are unlikely to be game-breaking or highly impactful. Nothing was locked.

The undead archetype invites obvious guesses — poison or disease resistance, reduced healing, something tied to not being alive — and none of them appears in any source. Community discussion of what traits should look like settled on out-of-combat movement speed, resting and regeneration, and profession perks as acceptable, with damage bonuses against specific races and combat stats such as critical strike and haste rejected. That is player preference and carries no developer endorsement.

Which classes they can play

The list below is the Domination class pool taken from the game client data behind this site's gear planner, shared identically by all four Domination races. It swaps the Sacred Order's Druid, Priest and Paladin for Necromancer, Mystic and Pirate.

Necromancer on an Undead character is the clearest race/class fantasy pairing on the roster, and it is the combination players named most often when talking about this race. Undead Druid was the more contested idea: the debate split between players rejecting it as anti-life and players arguing that decay, spores and the natural cycle make it perfectly plausible. Druid is not in the Domination pool.

The absent Priest generated the sharper argument, and it was framed as a consistency problem across both factions at once: if the lore says undead cannot be priests, players wanted it to explain why infernal demons can be paladins.

As with every race, the matrix is provisional. Official April 2026 messaging presented a full race × class availability table as the current plan for early access and likely 1.0 while stating it is subject to change; a chart circulating in March 2026 was withdrawn after the developers said it did not reflect the latest setup; and in late April they said combinations were still being adjusted in response to feedback. Adding Bearan and Gronthar for the playtest was said to give both factions access to all available classes, though the test build itself ran only four.

How they look — appearance and customisation

The Undead have the most distinctive customisation set in the game, and it is built around concealment rather than decay. The options shown in October 2024 centre on prosthetics and masks: porcelain-style prosthetic hands, and facial coverings ranging from partial masks to full-face masks. The eye sockets contain customisable soul wisps rather than normal eyes, with different glow colours planned or already present. The team also mentioned plans for more decayed facial detail, including exposed bone and more pronounced rotting features, noted as not yet fully implemented.

The art direction explains why. Rather than emphasising rot alone, Scars of Honor's undead lean into a gothic, vampire-adjacent aesthetic. They are not all heavily rotted in appearance; they often conceal damaged faces and body parts with masks and artificial additions, presenting themselves in a deliberate and stylised way to the living world. That is a cultural choice attributed to the race, not just an art shortcut.

The same principle governs their material culture. The undead are presented as a refined and culturally sophisticated society preserving artistic and aristocratic traditions from before undeath, with clothing and presentation emphasising elegance, status and cultivated taste. Their architecture and props carry the same register — a decayed but still dignified capital, brass and steam industry, and forge and town-prop concepts developed across several art passes.

Player feedback in April 2026 concentrated on body proportions rather than faces: players debated how muscular the male and female models look, whether the women read as less powerfully built than the rest of the roster, and whether the game leans too heavily toward muscular builds across all races. Separately, one popular guess was that the Undead might lean Victorian steampunk — that is player speculation, not a stated direction, though it sits close to the brass-and-steam material the developers have shown.

What is still unknown

The sources disagree on names: the capital appears as both Velas and Velaris, and the undead queen as both Nepherimas and Nefarimis. These are auto-captioned transcripts, so the variance belongs to the transcription rather than the setting, and which spelling is canonical is unresolved. The more decayed facial detail — exposed bone, pronounced rotting — was described as planned but not yet fully implemented. Whether Undead gain access to Priest is unresolved, and the lore reason for the current arrangement has not been given. The Victorian steampunk reading is player speculation, not a stated direction. No racial passives exist for any race. There is no announced release date; early access is estimated for Q1 2027 with nothing official behind it.
